The challenge

PuntCast, the start-up behind BettyBetBet, aimed to create a distinct and engaging social betting app where users would never play against the house but instead compete directly with friends, colleagues, and their football club. The goal was to foster a community-focused platform that promoted peer-to-peer games, that provide grassroots football clubs with a way to raise funds.

However, their initial development efforts with a London agency produced a product that lacked differentiation and failed to reflect the brand’s core values of fun, community, and engagement. With this being an app regulated by the Gambling Commission and with players in the UK, there are various legislations and requirements placed on it, including age verification, administration and payout that needed to be considered at all times.

To achieve PuntCast’s vision, Shoothill needed to deliver a fresh approach to several technical and functional challenges that the app presented while also producing a brand that conveyed their values and ambitions.

Our solution

Shoothill addressed these challenges with a holistic approach, designing and developing a mobile app that facilitated the brand and its goals. Calling upon their experiences in past projects, Shoothill provided comprehensive business advisory services to BettyBetBet. Throughout development Shoothill ensured that the BettyBetBet app met stringent legal standards required for operating, thereby positioning the company for a smooth and compliant market entry. This process continued with comprehensive support through the app publishing process including liaising with teams working on behalf of Google and Apple.

A robust and reliable game engine was essential to power King of the Hill, BettyBetBet’s flagship competition format based on the classic last man standing game. Shoothill created a seamless gaming experience where users could compete until one winner remains, with real-time updates and smooth user interactions. The development team at Shoothill built a powerful game engine that ensured smooth, real-time functionality for these games, where users played until one winner was declared. The Shoothill team carefully tested the engine to optimise its performance, ensuring that it could handle game dynamics without glitches delivering a high-quality user experience. This game engine will go on to support future games within the platform, supporting the business’ ambition to grow and turn BettyBetBet into a hub for sports-based social gaming.

This app was designed to enhance the peer-to-peer experience at the core of the business. It allows users to create and join their own games as well as and track game results. Match results are fed into the app using an API, that delivers accurate and up-to-date data keeping the games alive. This ensured that match outcomes were always reflected in real-time for ongoing matches, ensuring a clear experience for users.

There’s another world behind BettyBetBet that users won’t see, the administration side that enables the app to operate. Shoothill developed a comprehensive banking and game admin system that integrates seamlessly with their app. This system was designed to handle multiple critical functions efficiently. Firstly, it provided the app with secure access to user information, enabling real-time monitoring and data management. As a result, you can track player activities, verify identities, manage accounts and payment records while adhering to privacy standards.

Secondly, Shoothill built robust reporting tools within the admin system to generate the detailed reports required for legal, financial and regulatory compliance. These reports covered key metrics which are crucial for audits and ensuring adherence to gambling regulations.

Conclusion

The final product has exceeded expectations. The app’s look and feel perfectly aligned with BettyBetBet’s brand, delivering a bright, friendly, and engaging design that set it apart from traditional betting platforms. Users found the app’s interface intuitive and enjoyable to use from day one, it is simple to navigate and participate in games.

The app’s ease of use played a key role in its success. Players could effortlessly create leagues, join games with friends, and share game codes via links, reinforcing the social and community-based nature of the platform. BettyBetBet’s offering—a platform where users never play against the house, but against each other—resonated strongly with its audience. This unique peer-to-peer format made it easy for users to have fun, whether they were competing with friends, workmates, or fellow football club members.

This project has made full use of the Shoothill team’s capabilities, calling on the talents of our business advisors, developers, marketers, as a mobile app it has lots of Shoothill’s work resulted in an appealing and powerful product that allowed users to not only engage in social betting but also give back to their communities, all within a playful and responsible framework.
